Who we are
We are a small family business, with 4 residential care homes in Devon and 225 staff, including an experienced management team.
Geoffrey Cox, the M.D. of Southern Healthcare strongly believes in the influence of the foundational works of the late Carl Rogers, the architect of the concept of ‘Person Centredness’ and of our practising ‘Unconditional Positive Regard’ in interpersonal relationships throughout our homes. These are two of the key concepts which underpin the relationship ethos of the residential care homes.
We are implementing the cutting edge work of David Sheard of Dementia Care Matters into the Homes. David Sheard focuses upon a critical element of “life being an emotional journey” and the key elements of worthwhile “human connection”, the significance of emotions being at the very heart of care.
This requires a significant shift in traditional thinking about care services from providing care as a series of tasks, but instead thinking about key interactions, developing loving companionship and achieving strong emotional connection.
This is both at the heart of ‘person-centredness’ and is what Southern Healthcare is really focussed upon; striving to ensure that this is always readily apparent within the care homes, building on trust and inspiring confidence through such meaningful relationships.
