CQC inspections and why excellence should never stand still

Recent headlines about delayed CQC inspections have reignited an important conversation across the adult social care sector. Reports suggest more than 5,400 care homes in England have not received a full inspection in the past five years with hundreds more waiting significantly longer.

For families searching for the right care or nursing home, the statistics are understandably concerning. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) plays an important role in providing independent assurance that services are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

There’s no doubt a current inspection report offers reassurance and transparency, but this shouldn’t be a family’s sole focus. We know first-hand that delivering exceptional residential care and nursing care is not about preparing for an inspection. At Southern Healthcare, it’s about creating a culture where quality, compassion and continuous improvement are embedded in everything we do, every single day.

Outstanding care is a culture. The best care providers don’t become outstanding because an inspector is due to visit – they become outstanding because every member of the team shares the same purpose: to help people live fulfilling, dignified and meaningful lives.

We welcome robust and timely CQC inspections because independent regulation drives accountability, celebrates excellence and identifies where improvements are needed. It also gives prospective residents and their families confidence the care they are choosing has been independently assessed. We are thrilled to have three care homes rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC and one rated ‘good’ with outstanding elements.

When inspections become less frequent, there is a risk that published CQC ratings no longer reflect the reality of a service – whether that reality is positive or negative. Excellent providers deserve recognition for the innovations they continue to introduce. Equally, where standards have fallen, residents and families deserve timely oversight and action.

While CQC ratings are an important starting point, it should never be the only measure of a home’s quality. At Southern Healthcare, we invite Meaningful Care Matters, the Eden Alternative and other external professionals to complete an assessment or report on our quality of care, quality of interaction and compliance.

When families visit one of our nursing homes, we encourage them to look beyond the inspection report and to look for exceptional person-centred care.

Do residents appear happy, engaged and valued?

Are care teams interacting with residents with warmth, kindness and respect?

Is there laughter?

Do residents have a sense of purpose?

Is there genuine companionship?

The challenges facing adult social care are well documented. An ageing population, increasing complexity of care needs, workforce shortages and financial pressures continue to test care providers across the country. Despite these challenges, care professionals come to work each day with extraordinary commitment and compassion.

This is why the strongest care organisations are those who treat regulation, including CQC inspections, as one important part of a much wider commitment to quality. Ratings, reports and external assessments all matter, but they must sit alongside the everyday evidence families see for themselves: warm relationships, purposeful lives, genuine companionship and a culture that keeps striving to improve long after an inspection has taken place.
