Exeter Care Home Receives Excellent Rating

An Exeter care home has received an excellent rating from a highly regarded organisation which specialises in auditing care providers.

The Old Rectory, a Southern Healthcare home, received praise for their ‘highly engaged service where emotion-focused care is consistently evident in daily interactions’ from Meaningful Care Matters auditors, who were assessing the care home’s Butterfly programmes.

Meaningful Care Matters (MCM) auditors said The Old Rectory’s ‘person-centred approaches are firmly embedded, supported by detailed care planning, and contribute to a culture of loving, compassionate care’ and awarded it a Level 2, Excellent rating.

One of the auditors and the MCM managing director, Peter Bewert, said: “The Old Rectory continues to demonstrate excellence in delivering person-centred, compassionate dementia care, underpinned by genuine connections, visible leadership, and a vibrant, engaging environment.”

Established in 2019, MCM aims to change the culture of care by ensuring people have purpose, are empowered to be themselves and have meaningful relationships within their care setting.

MCM rate care providers on care delivery, individual care plans (including the restricted use of medication) and the meaningful relationships between staff and residents. Those dementia care providers, who demonstrate a high number of meaningful interactions against a long list of criteria, are awarded the status of a ‘Butterfly’ Home.

Peter went on to say: “The home fosters a true family spirit, reflected not only in the relationships between residents and staff, but also in the bonds with families, friends, and volunteers who are part of the community.”

He added: “It’s a place where individuals are welcomed, friendships are nurtured, and memories continue to be created as life is lived fully.”

Auditors also commented on the familiar and comforting sounds of home, the ‘strong, authentic and loving connections between team and members and people living in the home’ and the personalised and inclusive activities.

Geoffrey Cox, the managing director of Southern Healthcare, said: “A Level 2, Excellent rating from Meaningful Care Matters is a fantastic outcome, which truly reflect the skills and knowledge of the people in our team, their compassion, heart, and meaningful connection to the people they are caring for. I’m thrilled the auditor picked up on the home’s wonderful, loving environment and the teams’ deep connection to each other and the people they support.”

Southern Healthcare was also awarded ‘outstanding’ ratings for its homes in Dawlish and Plymouth and an ‘excellent’ rating for its home in Seaton.
